Erenburg wins NJ Futurity International
GM Sergey Erenburg has won the New Jersey Futurity International with a score of 6.5/9. His last round victory over IM Mikhail Zlotnikov sealed the victory, as penultimate round co-leader and countryman GM Leonid Yudasin drew IM Amon Simutowe. Third place went to GM Magesh Panchanathan.
NM Evan Ju, coming off his upset-prize-winning eighth round victory over GM Gennadi Zaichik, needed just a draw against FM Tom Bartell to secure an IM norm. Unfortunately for Ju, Bartell's passed c-pawn proved to be a fatal thorn in Ju's side, as he succumbed to severe time pressure in a difficult position.
The brilliancy prize went to a violent attacking display by NM Mackensie Molner, which you can replay here.
The New Jersey State Chess Federation website has a crosstable, results, and games.
Stay tuned to this blog in August, when we will preview the New Jersey Knockout inaugural season in the United States Chess League, and then check in every week during the season for results, as the Knockouts try to floor the competition.

Futurity Results, Round 5 and Norm Possibilities
Results of Round 5
Ju 0-1 Simutowe
Molner 0-1 Panchanathan
Yudasin 1-0 Zlotnikov
Zaichik 1/2 Erenburg
Bartell 1/2 Ippolito
GM Magesh Panchanathan won twice today to lead the New Jersey International Futurity by a half-point at 4/5 over GM Leonid Yudasin at 3.5/5. It was a tough day for third-round leader 15 year old US Cadet Champion Evan Ju, who lost both his games to Panchanathan and IM Amon Simutowe. Indeed, IM Simutowe erased memories of his bad (2 loss) day on Sunday, with wins today over FM Tom Bartell and Ju.
Four rounds left in this exciting tournament, that has seen 48% decisive games and only two short draws. For games and tournament details, go to the NJSCF site.

Norm Possibilities
Here are my completely unofficial estimates of norm possibilities for the participants. It is based on my personal lookups of FIDE ratings, and those ratings may not be officially certified. In addition, I had to unearth the arcane norm tables from the FIDE regulations, and there's no guarantee that I did it properly. Please, DO NOT COUNT ON THESE ESTIMATES.
IM norm: 5 points for everyone
GM norm: 7 points for everyone, except Evan Ju, where it is 6.5 - his opponents' rating average is in a higher category than others.
Evan Ju needs 4/4 in the last four rounds for GM norm, 2.5/4 in the last four rounds for IM norm.
Both FM Tom Bartell and Mackenzie Molner need 3/4 in the last four rounds for IM norm.
None of the IMs have a chance for a GM norm, unfortunately.
Again, let me emphasize that this is UNOFFICIAL and MY ESTIMATES ONLY. Your mileage may vary.
